ISO Minute: Collaborating with the New England states on transmission planning

ISO Minute is a video series featuring ISO New England employees speaking about their experiences working for the region’s independent system operator and supporting the safe and reliable transition to clean energy.

A robust transmission system is one of the four pillars supporting New England’s clean energy transition. This spring, at the direction of the New England States Committee on Electricity (NESCOE), ISO New England issued a request for proposals (RFP) aimed at addressing longer-term transmission needs in the region.

The goal of the RFP is to upgrade the transmission system between northern Maine, where land-based wind generation is expected to increase, and more populous regions of southern New England, where demand for electricity is highest.

In this ISO Minute, Melissa Winne, senior policy advisor for External Affairs, shares how the ISO is collaborating closely with the states to support long-term transmission planning. These efforts are informed by the ISO’s landmark 2050 Transmission Study.
