ISO Minute: Forecasting shifts in seasonal energy demand

ISO Minute is a video series featuring ISO New England employees speaking about their experiences working for the region’s independent system operator and supporting the safe and reliable transition to clean energy.

Since the 1990s, New Englanders have used the most electricity during the warmer months, relying on air conditioners to keep homes and businesses comfortable. However, the ISO projects a seasonal shift in annual peak demand over the next ten years.

In this ISO Minute video, Victoria Rojo, lead data scientist on the ISO’s Load Forecasting team, explains how increased adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps will increase energy demand during the winter months.

For more details on seasonal peak demand and the ISO’s long-term forecasting efforts, read about the 2024-2033 Forecast Report of Capacity, Energy, Loads and Transmission (CELT Report).
