Training resources address utility impacts of distributed energy resource aggregations
A new self-paced training module is designed to help host utilities understand the operational impact of distributed energy resource aggregations (DERAs) under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Order No. 2222.
“Understanding DERA Operations from a Utility Perspective” explains what changes, what does not change, and what utilities should realistically expect as DERAs begin participating in ISO New England’s wholesale markets. It also explores the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, dispatch concepts, and operational impacts from a utility perspective.
To reinforce key concepts addressed in the training, the following companion resources are also available:
- Common Misconceptions & Clarifications addresses frequently misunderstood concepts related to DERA participation and market operations. This resource helps participants distinguish common assumptions from operational realities and provides clarifications on topics such as dispatch communications, activation impacts, and participant responsibilities.
- Dispatch in Plain Language explains how wholesale market dispatch activities affect DERAs and what host utilities may observe as a result. Participants will learn what occurs behind the scenes when aggregations receive market instructions, what information utilities can and cannot see, and why utilities are not part of the wholesale dispatch path.
- A Visibility Diagram illustrates how information and activities flow between ISO-NE, aggregators, DERs, and host utilities. The infographic highlights what each stakeholder can see and how operational impacts become visible at the distribution system level.
