ISO Minute: Preparing power system operators
ISO Minute is a video series featuring ISO New England employees speaking about their experiences working for the region’s independent system operator and supporting the ongoing evolution of the electric system.
When unexpected conditions arise on the power grid, ISO New England’s system operators are prepared to respond. That preparation includes extensive training and realistic simulations designed to help operators manage a wide range of scenarios.
In this ISO Minute, Jaren Lutenegger, director of Operational Performance, Training & Integration, shares how operators maintain their skills through continuing education and hands-on training exercises.
“We have to train for a very large variety of scenarios,” notes Lutenegger. “Training across seasons, temperatures, hot, cold, new technologies like (battery) storage, and very large fluctuations in wind or solar output.”
