ISO-NE fact sheet, webpage offer help understanding electricity prices

The cost of electricity, like many everyday expenses, has increased in recent years. Those increases reflect a mix of factors, including fuel prices, weather, infrastructure needs, and public policy decisions.

A new fact sheet from ISO New England helps consumers make sense of these factors by breaking down the organizations that influence electricity prices, the difference between wholesale and retail prices, and the components of a typical retail electric bill.

Additionally, a new webpage at iso-ne.com answers frequently asked questions about wholesale and retail electricity costs. The page also discusses ISO New England’s role in the region’s energy landscape.

Costs associated with the wholesale markets ISO New England administers, as well as the transmission system, make up about a third of the average residential customer’s annual electricity costs. The remaining two-thirds of the average electric bill is related to the retail system and state policies, and is outside of the ISO’s control.
