Navigating the Energy Markets: Registration open for 3-day intermediate class

Registration is open for Navigating the Energy Markets (NavEM), a scenario-based, three-day class designed to explore the nuances of the markets and services available in New England.

The class will be offered April 28-30 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at ISO New England’s Holyoke Campus in Massachusetts. The cost is $1,200.

NavEM will give participants an in-depth understanding of opportunities to participate in New England’s wholesale electricity markets. Topics include:

  • How the ISO New England control room forecasts load and operates the grid
  • How demand bids and supply offers impact day-ahead and real-time prices
  • Ways to hedge against congestion and future market uncertainty
  • Why ancillary services — regulation, reserves, voltage control, and blackstart capability — exist to ensure grid stability
  • How and when financial transactions are processed

NavEM goes beyond theoretical concepts, offering a practical, hands-on exploration of how wholesale electricity is supplied for demand and other critical services. Through case studies and simulations, participants will use the tools that can help identify market signals and forecast potential price volatility.

The course is designed for individuals with an introductory knowledge of the New England wholesale electricity markets who wish to advance to an intermediate level. Participant Training Services recommends completing the two-day course New England’s Wholesale Electricity Markets prior to registering for NavEM.

A learner survey and approximately 60 minutes of self-paced video assignments will be assigned before the start of class. Instructions for accessing the pre-work will be emailed to all registered attendees on Wednesday, April 15. Completion of pre-work assignments and full-day attendance on all three days is required to receive course credit.
