ISO Minute: Modeling the power system
ISO Minute is a video series featuring ISO New England employees speaking about their experiences working for the region’s independent system operator and supporting the safe and reliable transition to clean energy.
Inside ISO New England’s control room, system operators monitor the flow of electricity every minute of every day. In this ISO Minute, Ricardo Santoni Carrero, engineer, shares how the power system modeling group supports the work of those operators.
The grid is made up of power generators, substations, and transmission lines to move power to where it is needed. The power system modeling group ensures that new generators are incorporated or updated to ensure operators have the tools they need to reliably operate the grid.
Santoni Carrero’s passion for the power grid is a personal one. Originally from Puerto Rico, Santoni Carrero saw the impacts of Hurricane Maria, shaping his interest in strengthening electric systems. This passion led him to study at Arizona State University and ultimately to his role at ISO New England.
