ISO Minute: Staying prepared for geomagnetic disturbances

ISO Minute is a video series featuring ISO New England employees speaking about their experiences working for the region’s independent system operator and supporting the safe and reliable transition to clean energy.

When considering weather-related impacts on the power grid, hurricanes, snowstorms, and heat waves often come to mind. However, space weather, particularly geomagnetic disturbances caused by solar storms, can also interfere with transmission equipment if left unchecked.

In this ISO Minute, Steve Gould, director of Operations, explains how the ISO’s system operators train and prepare to manage these disturbances.
