ISO Minute: Winter power system operations

ISO Minute is a video series featuring ISO New England employees speaking about their experiences working for the region’s independent system operator and supporting the safe and reliable transition to clean energy.

In this ISO Minute, Jonathan Gravelin, the ISO’s manager of control room operations, explains how the region’s grid operator prepares to balance electricity supply and demand during the winter season.

“We need to ensure we have adequate generation supply to meet the needs of the region,” Gravelin notes.

Overseeing the day-to-day operation of New England’s power grid is one of the ISO’s three critical roles. From our state-of-the-art master control center (MCC) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the ISO’s certified system operators monitor, dispatch, and direct the flow of electricity across the power grid 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
