ISO-NE incorporates wind-powered resources into real-time dispatch with Do Not Exceed Dispatch Project

The change helps improve price formation in the markets and marks an important milestone in ISO New England’s efforts to efficiently integrate renewable resources

On May 25, the region’s wind-powered resources and intermittent hydro resources began taking electronic dispatch instructions from ISO New England for the first time and became eligible to set real-time prices in the wholesale electricity marketplace. These changes were effected by the Do Not Exceed (DNE) Dispatch Project in which the ISO worked with stakeholders to implement a modified electronic dispatch method for these intermittent resources. How the region is on its way to meeting states’ “green power” goals

New Englanders take note: as the world marks the 46th annual Earth Day on Friday, April 22, widespread efforts are well underway here, in our six-state region, to develop cleaner sources of electric energy and reduce electricity use. ISO New England has been working closely with both the states and industry stakeholders to help quantify and integrate regional developments related to energy-efficiency (EE) programs and wind and solar resources, two renewable sources of power.

ISO-NE’s research recognized internationally by INFORMS

Paper outlines innovative model for unit commitment as system uncertainty increases

A research paper by ISO New England’s Business Architecture and Technology (BAT) team was among the finalists for 2015’s prestigious Best Publication Award in Energy from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). The paper, “Adaptive Robust Optimization for the Security Constrained Unit Commitment Problem,” describes the pioneering application of a powerful risk management modeling tool in the electricity industry. The paper won honorable mention (second place) out of numerous journal articles from operations researchers and professionals around the globe. Originally published in IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, the journal article is having significant influence; it’s been referenced by researchers in almost 300 other academic and industry publications so far.

FCA #9: New offer review trigger prices (ORTPs) are accepted by FERC

Revised ORTPs went into effect May 13

On May 12, 2014, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved several revisions ISO New England proposed to offer review trigger prices (ORTPs) in the Forward Capacity Market (FCM). The new ORTPs are effective May 13, 2014, to ensure that market participants preparing qualification packages for the ninth Forward Capacity Auction (FCA #9) have certainty regarding the applicable ORTPs in advance of the June 17, 2014, qualification deadline.

New wind power forecast integrated into ISO-NE processes and control room operations 

More precise information about the predicted electricity output from  wind resources improves dispatch efficiency, helps optimize power output from wind generators

Over the past several years, the amount of wind power connected to the New England high-voltage power grid has increased at a fairly quick pace—from approximately two megawatts (MW) in 2005 to more than 700 MW on the system today. Another 2,000 MW of wind generation has been proposed in the region.
