ISO-NE prepares to operate the grid through winter storm conditions

ISO New England is monitoring Winter Storm Juno and its severity and is preparing to operate the grid through winter storm conditions. In preparation of the storm, the ISO has been in close contact with the following groups, and will continue communications throughout the storm and after, as necessary, to ensure a coordinated approach:

  • National Weather Service
  • Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC)
  • Local Control Centers and transmission owners
  • Neighboring control areas
  • Power plants
  • Natural gas pipelines

ISO New England has staffed its backup control center and is scheduling additional control room operators and engineering, market operations, facilities, and information technology personnel to its main control center.

At 2:00 p.m. today, ISO New England implemented its abnormal condition alert procedure, Master/Local Control Center Procedure No. 2. This action was declared as a precautionary measure to cancel or postpone scheduled generation and transmission outages, increase power system flexibility, and ensure that the system is in the highest possible state of readiness.

The grid is currently operating under normal conditions, and system operators will take the necessary steps to maintain system reliability throughout and after the storm.
